CUSTOM JOB PROFILE 8: SPECIALIST IN BIOLOGICAL PROCESS OPTIMIZATION - WATER TREATMENT

A specialist in optimizing biological water treatment processes managing and optimizing biological processes in water treatment plants (municipal, industrial, or potable wastewater), monitoring microbiological and chemical-physical parameters to ensure treatment efficiency and controlling bacterial populations (activated sludge, biofilm) responsible for pollutant degradation.

  • Fundamentals of microbiology and biochemistry
  • Knowledge of biological treatment processes
  • Water chemistry fundamentals (BOD, COD, nitrogen compounds, phosphorus, suspended solids)
  • Process control and instrumentation
  • Data analysis and interpretation of laboratory results and process parameters
  • Sampling techniques and laboratory procedures
  • Understanding of equipment maintenance
  • Process optimization to reduce energy and chemical consumption

Biological Process Expertise: In-depth understanding of aerobic (e.g., activated sludge, MBBR) and anaerobic (e.g., UASB, anaerobic digestion) wastewater treatment processes to optimize microbial activity, pollutant removal, and sludge management.

Process Optimization and Control: Proficiency in analyzing and fine-tuning biological treatment parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, retention time, nutrient dosing) to maximize treatment efficiency and minimize operational costs.

Microbiological Analysis and Monitoring: Skills in monitoring microbial communities and their performance using techniques like microscopy, DNA sequencing, or respirometry to ensure optimal biological activity in wastewater treatment systems.

Data Analysis and Modeling: Ability to use data analytics tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and process modeling software (e.g., BioWin, GPS-X) to analyze treatment performance, simulate process improvements, and implement data-driven optimization strategies.

Knowledge of Energy and Environmental Regulations: Understanding of energy-efficient practices in biological treatment and familiarity with environmental regulations to ensure compliance while optimizing processes for sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Knowledge about co-digestion process: Understanding of possible wastes to be used as co-substrates, with knowledge about biomethanization.
