Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the largest University in Greece, with 11 faculties, 41 Departments and more than 55,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
Datalab – Data and Web Science Lab, an active research laboratory at School of Informatics, AUTH, has extensive expertise in the areas of big data management, AI driven data mining and knowledge detection, graph management and mining, distributed and massively parallel systems to support data science, human-centric ML and AI-based analytics. Datalab has strong experience in research and innovation actions and can offer top-quality consulting, and advanced research and development services for any Data and Web Science project. The Datalab team is engaged in high quality research and development activities in the areas of ICT technologies, cross-discipline Data and Web intelligent solutions, with additional interest on multi-domain synergies and successful implementations in smart cities, the health domain, the energy sector, cloud computing, and collective awareness platforms

AUTH assumes a horizontal role by building and supporting data-driven stakeholder awareness and engagement services. AUTH is also responsible for delivering the community-based distributed energy storage toolset in TRINEFLEX.

Athena Vakali

Computer Science Professor / Datalab Team Leader / Principal Investigator

She holds a PhD degree in Informatics (Aristotle University), a MSc degree in Computer Science (Purdue University, USA) and a BSc in Mathematics (Aristotle University). Her current research interests include big data mining and analytics, AI algorithms for Next Generation Internet, smart cities data analytics, online social networks mining, as well as on online sources data management on the cloud. Her publication record of over 160 papers received over 8,050 citations (h-index 37 in Google scholar). She has served as a member in the EU Steering Committee for the Future Internet Assembly (2012-14) and she has participated in more than 30 research projects (EU H2020, FP7, Erasmus+, International and national funds) related to ICT, Next Generation Internet, Collective awareness and quality research funds (Marie-Curie). She has acted as the principal investigator in 15 research projects over the last 5 years, while she is currently involved in 9 research and innovation projects. She has co-chaired major Conferences Committees such as IEEE/ACM/WIC Web Intelligence 2019, EAI 2016 Conference on Future Internet Infrastructures, Enablers and EU Internet Science Conference 2015, ACM International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering, etc.

Anastasios Gounaris

Prior to that, he was a visiting lecturer with the University of Cyprus, and a researcher with the School of Computer Science of the University of Manchester, UK, and the Centre of Research and Technology Hellas CERTH. A. Gounaris received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester (UK) in 2005. He was also awarded an MPhil in Computation in 2002 by UMIST (UK) and a BSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1999 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His research interests are in the area of autonomic, adaptive and wide-area data management, massive parallelism, flow and query optimization, data mining and resource scheduling. He has served as a program committee member in several international conferences and workshops. He has more than 80 publications in international journals and conferences. Vasileios Psomiadis

Senior Researcher / Post-Doc Researcher / Project Manager

He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 2005 from AUTH and he holds a MSc. in Information Systems since 2011 from Hellenic Open University. He has worked as a freelance engineer and as an IT professional for several years. He possesses skills at project management acquired by supervising various technology projects in academia and innovation research but also with strong experience in the private sector. He has supported dissemination, communication and exploitation planning, development and implementation of both commercial and research activities. He has served as the project manager of previous H2020 and national projects and he is also experienced in designing gamification frameworks where end users are encouraged to engage with commercial systems. He has participated in National and International conferences, published in scientific journals and worked as scientific and laboratory associate in the Technological Educational Institute of Central Macedonia.

Pavlos Sermpezis

Senior Researcher / Post-Doc Researcher sermpezis@csd.auth.gr

He holds a PhD in Computer Science and Networks (2015, from EURECOM, France), and a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2011, from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece). His research interests include recommendation systems, data analytics, modelling experience, performance analysis and modelling, Internet measurements. He has participated in several European projects, and in organizing committees and technical program committees of ACM/IEEE conferences and workshops.

Ilias Dimitriadis

I.Dimitriadis received his PhD in 2022, working on the field of Graph Mining, Social Network Analysis and Machine Learning, He holds a BSc in Physics, (2012 – Dpt. of Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and a MSc in Information Communication Technologies (2015 – International Hellenic University – IHU). His main research interests are focused in the area of Social Network Analysis, using hybrid graph and machine learning methodologies. He has participated in several EU Horizon 2020 and National funded projects during the past 7 years as a developer, researcher and team leader.

Theodoros Toliopoulos

T. Toliopoulos received his PhD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2022 working on the field of big data management and more specifically on big data stream processing. He graduated from the Department of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2013 (BSc) and 2018 (MSc). His main research interests are in the areas of outlier detection and continuous data stream analysis. He has participated as a research assistant in European and Greek projects. He has worked in the private sector for over 5 years as a developer and small team leader.

George Vlahavas

PhD candidate/ Researcher / blockchain technologies / dev ops

He holds degrees in Computer Science from the Hellenic Open University, Greece, as well as in Food Technology from the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, Greece, an MSc in Applied Informatics from the University of Macedonia, Greece and an MSc in Quality Assurance from the University of Reading, UK. His main research interests are in blockchain technologies and decentralized and distributed systems, data science and statistics. He also has extensive software engineering experience, particularly with operating systems development. He has participated as a researcher in several H2020 and Erasmus+ projects. He has published in books, scientific journals as well as international and national conference proceedings.
